How to Make a Request in English: Polite Phrases
Learn polite ways to make requests in English and sound natural, whether in casual or formal situations.
Hello, wonderful learners!
Today, we’ll learn how to make polite requests in English. Whether you need a favor from a friend or want to ask for something in a formal setting, knowing the right phrases will help you make your request clearly and respectfully.
Casual Requests
Use these phrases with friends, family, or people you know well:
“Can you pass me the salt?”
“Could you help me with this?”
“Do you mind giving me a ride?”
More example:
“Can I borrow your book?”
Polite or Formal Requests
For professional situations or when speaking with someone you don’t know well, these phrases sound more respectful:
“Could you please send me the report by tomorrow?”
“May I ask for your help with this project?”
“Would you mind opening the window?”
More examples:
“Would it be possible to reschedule the meeting?”
“May I have a few minutes of your time?”
Asking Indirectly
Sometimes, an indirect request sounds more polite or appropriate:
“I was wondering if you could help me.”
“Would it be alright if I used your laptop?”
“Do you think you could explain this to me?”
More example:
“I was hoping you might have some time to talk.”
Responding to Requests
If someone grants your request, it’s polite to show gratitude:
“Thank you so much!”
“I really appreciate it.”
If they decline, respond politely:
“No problem, I understand.”
“That’s alright, thanks anyway.”
Extra Tip: Use “Please” and “Thank You”
Adding “please” and “thank you” to your requests makes them sound friendlier and more polite. Even small words like these go a long way in creating positive interactions.
That’s it for today! Practice making polite requests using these phrases, and soon you’ll feel comfortable asking for things in English in any situation.
Until tomorrow, happy learning!
